1 /5 Paitlyn McDonald: I had a very disappointing experience at this church, and unfortunately, it’s made me feel completely unwelcome. My first visit a few weeks ago was uncomfortable from the start. As I entered, the man at the door greeted me with, “Smile, baby, what’s wrong?”—a comment that felt creepy, inappropriate, and frankly misogynistic. For a place that should be focused on respect, kindness, and spiritual growth, that interaction came across as deeply out of place and unsettling.
I decided to give the church another chance today, but it only confirmed my concerns. I was dealing with personal family matters and arrived a few minutes late. Instead of being welcomed with grace or understanding, the pastor took the opportunity to criticize people for showing up late, saying things along the lines of how being late to church means you won’t be blessed. It felt like a public shaming rather than a message of love and compassion.
This kind of scrutinizing, judgmental behavior is exactly what drives people away from the church. In a time when so many are seeking real connection and acceptance, this church felt cold, performative, and unwelcoming. I truly hope they take this feedback seriously and reflect on how their actions and words affect those who walk through their doors.
